Roulston Research August 1st Healthcare Roundtable with Former WellPoint and UnitedHealth Group Executives

August 2, 2012

Our August 1st Healthcare Roundtable led by Jim Parker, CEO of Indiana University Health Plans and Former President of Government Solutions at WellPoint, and Mark Lindsay, Consultant at the The Livingston Group and Former President of AARP Services at UnitedHealth Group, focused on responses by states to the Supreme Court decision, Medicaid expansion, dual eligible’s, reform implementation on different levels, and best-positioned companies in managed care, pharma, hospitals, and services. The roundtable began by discussing more general issues facing the healthcare industry; the speakers explained how companies are adopting different care models going forward as recent litigation has changed the face of the industry. The models focus on aspects that would improve outcomes, increase efficiencies and lower costs for healthcare providers. Jim and Mark were skeptical of certain models as they pointed out how many of them have yet to be put into action. The industry still awaits a government spending cap announcement regarding limits for different healthcare situations. This announcement affects cost structure and payment reforms of companies going forward.

The roundtable later focused on more reforms facing the industry and highlighted certain topics such as; delivering care vs. managing outcomes, importance of payment reforms, available resources, differences in policy models by region, market segmentation, culture change and cost shifting. Jim and Mark touched on these topics by referencing companies such as UnitedHealth, WellPoint, Humana, Cigna, CVS, Aetna, Wellcare, Molina, Centene, Express Scripts, Magellan, Coventry and Healthways. The speakers emphasized how big data will be a major driver going forward, preventive care may become mandatory and how consumerism is affecting the industry. The roundtable concluded by addressing future markets and opportunities for smaller companies forward.
